In 2010, the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil spill in the Gulf Coast impacted not only the wild animals in and around the ocean, but domestic animals as well. Shelters were overwhelmed with animals, facing owner surrender rates more than five times the normal because so many people had lost their livelihoods and homes and had little choice but to give up their family pets.
I arranged a transport of 14 such dogs from New Orleans to homes in the Southwest, and I kept only one for myself. I didn’t plan to keep any, but Diesel had other thoughts about that.
This is Diesel’s Story. Lucky dog travels cross-country to find a home, by Sheila Stroup – Times Picayune Article
With the help of brilliant animal photographer Joyce Fay, I entered a picture of Diesel in the New Mexico Lottery Lucky Dog Scratcher photo contest, and he won!!! (See above)
My equally brilliant webmaster, Denise Traver, turned her hand to Photoshopping his picture.
